Slurry seal is a thin layer formed by mixing emulsified asphalt, coarse and fine aggregates, water, fillers (such as cement, lime, fly ash, stone powder, etc.) and additives according to the design ratio using mechanical equipment, and then spreading it on the original road surface.
This thin layer is mainly used for early preventive maintenance of highways, which can effectively extend the service life of the road and improve driving comfort. Slurry seal can be divided into fine seal (Type I), medium seal (Type II) and coarse seal (Type III) according to the different mineral aggregate ratios, represented by ES1, ES2 and ES-3 respectively. Compared with other types of seals, slurry seal is simple to construct, has a short construction period and small construction volume, and is suitable for narrow sites and complex geological conditions. Slurry Seal Mix Design 1. The mix design of slurry seal mainly includes the following materials and their proportions:

(1) Emulsified Asphalt: One of the main materials used in slurry seal is emulsified asphalt. Commonly used emulsified asphalt types include BCR modified emulsified asphalt. Its performance indicators, such as evaporation residue content, penetration, ductility, and softening point, all have strict technical requirements.
(2) Stone chips and mineral powder: Stone chips and mineral powder are the main aggregates in slurry seal. Specific requirements are placed on the particle composition and performance indicators of stone chips, such as crushing value, Los Angeles abrasion loss, and relative density. Detailed regulations also apply to the particle composition of mineral powder.
(3) Water and additives: Appropriate amounts of water and additives, such as cement, lime, and fly ash, need to be added to the slurry seal mixture to improve its performance.
2. Specific mix design steps and target mix proportions are as follows:
(1) Material selection: Select suitable emulsified asphalt, stone chips, and mineral powder to ensure their performance indicators meet technical requirements.
(2) Mix design: Determine the ratio of mineral powder to stone chips according to the design requirements. Typically, the ratio of mineral powder to stone chips is 6% to 94%, the optimal asphalt-aggregate ratio is 7.4%, and the optimal total moisture content is 14.6%. (3) Mixture Performance Testing: The performance of the mixture is tested to ensure it meets requirements such as density and wear resistance.
3. Application Scenarios and Construction Methods of Slurry Seal: Slurry seal is mainly used for early preventative maintenance of highways, improving pavement performance by spreading a thin layer. During construction, specialized machinery is used to evenly spread the mixture on the road surface, forming a dense and wear-resistant surface.
