A variety of sealant technologies are widely used in highway maintenance, with emulsified asphalt slurry and synchronized chip seal being particularly common. A wide variety of sealant technologies are used in highway maintenance, including emulsified asphalt slurry seal, synchronized chip seal, Cape seal, fog seal, caulking seal, micro-surfacing seal, and stone chip seal. Among these, emulsified asphalt slurry seal, synchronized chip seal, and Cape seal are the most widely used in my country.
▲ Technical Principle
Slurry seal forms a strong protective layer through a specific process, improving pavement performance and lifespan. Slurry seal is an important highway maintenance method. Its principle involves evenly spreading a slurry mixture on the pavement. Through a series of technical processes, including coating, demulsification, water extraction, evaporation, and curing, a dense, strong, and wear-resistant sealant is formed. This sealant effectively improves pavement performance and extends its service life. ▲ Type Selection and Construction Key Points
Select the seal coat based on the performance and thickness of the asphalt, and follow standardized procedures for personnel, equipment, and technical processes. Slurry seal technology can be categorized according to various standards. Based on the performance differences of the emulsified asphalt, slurry seal can be divided into two types: standard and modified. Furthermore, depending on the thickness, slurry seal can be further divided into fine seal, medium seal, coarse seal, and extra-thick seal. When selecting a seal coat, it is important to understand the applicable scope and characteristics of each seal coat so that you can make the appropriate choice based on the actual road conditions.

Slurry seal construction requires adherence to a series of standards, primarily regarding personnel, machinery, equipment, and technical processes. Personnel include command and technical personnel, drivers, and workers involved in paving, machine repair, testing, and loading. Key equipment involved in construction includes emulsifiers, pavers, loaders, and conveyors.
In terms of technical processes, key road surface defects, such as potholes and cracks, must first be repaired. Appropriate personnel and materials are assigned based on the severity of the defect. Next, the road surface must be cleaned to ensure construction quality. Next comes pre-wetting, where watering ensures good adhesion of the slurry to the existing pavement and facilitates its placement and formation. The paving process involves a series of operations, including setting up the paving trough, adjusting the front zipper and aggregate outlet, and starting the paver. During the paving process, the paver speed must be controlled to ensure slurry remains in the paving mold and to be cleaned between intervals.
The final step involves traffic interruption and preliminary maintenance. Before the seal coat is formed, traffic must be interrupted to prevent damage from vehicles. If localized damage occurs, slurry repairs should be performed immediately to prevent further damage.
Given the continuous growth of traffic volume and the increasing severity of road damage in my country, the development of effective highway maintenance technologies is crucial. This article, based on seal coat technology, provides an in-depth discussion of commonly used slurry seal technologies in my country. By understanding their principles, construction options, and specific processes, we can select the appropriate technology for specific needs and further research and improve existing technologies, thereby improving my country's highway maintenance and promoting economic development.
