1. Chip Seal
Chip seal is a common asphalt seal coating method. It involves spraying a layer of asphalt onto the pavement, then immediately spreading a layer of chippings or sand. This tightly bonds the asphalt and chippings, forming a protective layer. This method is simple, cost-effective, and can quickly restore pavement functionality. However, it's important to note that chip seal requires high raw material quality and construction techniques; otherwise, problems such as peeling and cracking can easily occur.
2. Slurry Seal
Slurry seal is a sealing technique that involves mixing emulsified asphalt, coarse and fine aggregate, water, fillers, and additives according to a designed ratio into a slurry mixture and evenly applying it to the pavement. This method offers advantages such as fast application, energy conservation, environmental protection, and minimal traffic impact. At the same time, slurry seals can significantly improve the pavement's waterproofing, skid resistance, and wear resistance, extending its service life.
III. Microsurfacing
Microsurfacing is a thin layer of polymer-modified emulsified asphalt, aggregate, filler, water, and additives mixed in a reasonable ratio and applied to the existing pavement using specialized construction equipment. It is suitable for treating pavement surface defects such as degradation, minor rutting, and unevenness, thereby improving pavement performance and extending its service life. Microsurfacing offers advantages such as fast application, rapid reopening to traffic, wear resistance, and a long service life.
IV. Fog Seal
Fog seal is a preventative maintenance technique that applies emulsified asphalt or modified emulsified asphalt to the asphalt pavement in a mist form to seal pavement gaps, repair deterioration, and improve its appearance. It effectively prevents moisture and air from entering the pavement, protecting the pavement structure from damage. It also improves the pavement's skid resistance and driving safety. It is important to note that the pavement should be cleaned before fog seal application to ensure it is free of debris and oil that could affect the quality of the application.
