The purpose of using emulsified SBS modified asphalt is mainly to improve high temperature stability; low temperature shrinkage cracking resistance; early strength, cohesion, adhesion strength; water peeling resistance; fatigue resistance; and extend the life of the pavement. In particular, emulsified modified asphalt with ultra-high SBS and asphalt content will complement advanced maintenance equipment and processes.

(1) Synchronous gravel seal: The original intention of the design is to use emulsified SBS modified asphalt with a modified asphalt content of more than 69%. The use of high-performance and high-content emulsified SBS modified asphalt has a higher asphalt oil-stone ratio, better high and low temperature performance and bonding strength than traditional emulsified ordinary asphalt and SBR latex modified emulsified asphalt, thereby improving pavement performance and extending service life.
(2) Ultra-thin wear layer: Emulsified SBS modified asphalt spreading and hot asphalt mixture paving are carried out simultaneously. Emulsified SBS modified asphalt is sprayed in front, followed by hot asphalt mixture paving. Under the action of hot mixture, the emulsified modified asphalt climbs to 1/3 to 2/3 of the paving thickness and fills the gaps in the hot mixture, which not only has a water-sealing effect, but also provides sufficient strength and adhesion for the ultra-thin surface layer. Without emulsified SBS modified asphalt with satisfactory performance, the implementation of this technology cannot be guaranteed.
(3) Cold regeneration: To achieve true cold regeneration, high-content and high-performance emulsified SBS modified asphalt is indispensable. It has a higher oil film thickness and coating for stone than traditional emulsified asphalt, reduces the void ratio of the mixture, increases the high and low temperature performance and water peeling resistance of the mixture, and improves the durability of the road surface.
(4) Cold-mixed and cold-laid emulsified modified asphalt has the characteristics of high solid content, high particle uniformity, and good storage stability; the evaporation residue has the characteristics of high softening point, high ductility, high viscoelasticity, and high elastic recovery; its microstructure is water-in-oil emulsified modified asphalt. When cement is added, the cement particles and water are separated by asphalt particles, forming a stable mixed system of rigid gelling system and flexible gelling system; room temperature modified emulsified asphalt is mixed with suitable graded stone (room temperature or about 100°C) to prepare room temperature asphalt mixture with excellent performance, which can be used for small-area repair of asphalt pavement, and can also be used for large-area pavement paving by paver. After preliminary road repair and large-area pavement paving and other practical tests, good economic and social benefits have been achieved.
(5) Cold construction caulking glue, tack coat oil, bridge deck and pavement waterproofing and other fields. In 2010, emulsified SBS modified asphalt was successfully used in the tack coat of the Shanxi Linwu Line Reconstruction Project. The content of modified asphalt is greater than 55%, the softening point of evaporation residue is greater than 60℃, the penetration is 55 (0.1mm), and the elongation at 5℃ is greater than 30cm; in August 2011, in the Wuwei Highway Section in Gansu Province, emulsified SBS modified asphalt was successfully used in micro-surfacing, with a content of modified asphalt greater than 65%, a softening point of evaporation residue above 70℃, a penetration of 68, and an elongation of 35-45cm at 5℃; in October 2011, in the micro-surfacing of Guangzhou West Second Ring Expressway and the micro-surfacing of national and provincial roads in Dongguan City, the content of modified asphalt was greater than 62%, the softening point of evaporation residue above 72℃, the penetration of 70, and the elongation of 39cm at 5℃ were carried out.
